A collection of rings Inspired by the hot springs and sulphur lakes of Aotearoa. Aotearoa is the Maori name for the country we now know as New Zealand and is commonly translated as "The Land of the Long White Cloud". This project is my way of showing love and respect for this beautiful country that I was lucky enough to explore and call home for a year. Each ring is hand carved out of earthenware clay and glazed with an array of glazes and underglaze pencils.

2015
Natural phenomena such as crater lakes, mountains and riverbeds were the main focus of inspiration for this body of work. I wanted to capture the beauty of these phenomena and recreate them as wearable art. I was inspired by the secrets of the natural world and wanted to highlight its hidden beauty. My use of bold and vibrant colours was influenced by Cano Cristales, the ‘’River of Five Colours’’ in Columbia.
I hand carved the rings out of earthenware clay. I used a combination of ceramic pencils and an array of glazes. These materials have distinctive properties and I chose them for their fluidity, varying textures and striking, bright colours. I was able to manipulate them and explore the visual equivalents I found in the research.
